Langley Shows Olympic Spirit as Latest Gamestown 2010 Winner

LANGLEY – By showcasing their Olympic Spirit and demonstrating a healthy lifestyle, residents of Langley are the latest winners of ActNow BC’s GamesTown 2010 contest, announced Mary Polak, MLA for Langley.

“Langley is one of many B.C. communities getting closer to a first place finish in B.C.’s GamesTown 2010 contest by showing their healthy living leadership and 2010 Games spirit,” says Polak. “I’m pleased to see communities across the province submit entries into the contest, rallying to win the title of GamesTown 2010.”

As a monthly GamesTown 2010 winner, the community of Langley has won a pair of Olympic tickets to an event at the 2010 Winter Games. More than 80 communities have submitted entries including written stories, photos and videos into the contest. Langley’s entry for GamesTown 2010 can be viewed at www.gamestown2010.com/langley.

British Columbians can now use the ActNow BC Activity Map, a new online resource, to find communities that are entered into GamesTown 2010, as well as countries around the world who are taking the World Healthy Living Challenge. The map also includes event listings from across the province leading up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. To view the map and search the events, go to www.actnowbc.ca/event/map.

The deadline for GamesTown 2010 entries is Oct. 31, 2009 when an online voting period will let the public select the top ten communities. From there, a panel of B.C. celebrities, including Olympians Steve Podborski, Simon Whitfield and Nancy Greene Raine, along with Dr. Rhonda Low, will select gold, silver and bronze medal winners. The gold, silver and bronze medal winners will receive cash awards of $100,000, $50,000 and $25,000, respectively, to put towards upgrading a local sport or healthy living facility. Grand prize winners will also receive tickets to the 2010 Winter Games.

Community entries for GamesTown 2010 are judged on the creativity and enthusiasm of their submissions and a variety of healthy living and environmental sustainability criteria, including the level of community engagement in amateur sports and at recreation facilities and the community’s participation in the World Healthy Living Challenge.
